St. Dominic receives the Holy Rosary from the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Christ Child, from a 17th Century engraving.
According to legend, Saint Dominic (ca. 1170-1221) had a vision in which the Virgin Mary appeared to him and presented him with a string of beads. The beads came to be used in personal devotional practice as they helped the user count a sequence of salutations to the Virgin.
