Saint Clare of Assisi, from a vintage holy card. The young Clare devoted herself to a life of prayer, penance, and charitable works, deciding to remain a virgin. Hearing of her virtue, Francis talked with her, and on Palm Sunday in 1212, Clare left her family home to join Francis in his way of life. Francis settled Clare and several other noble women who joined her at the Church of San Damiano outside Assisi. Pope Innocent IV approved a Rule Clare had composed, preserving the radical commitment to poverty, to which she clung throughout her life as a religious. Hers was the first such Rule, written by a woman, to be approved by the Church. The sisters are primarily contemplative, devoting themselves to prayer and supporting themselves by the work of their hands.
